Your guide to horseback riding for beginners

Your guide to horseback riding for beginners – what you need in your wardrobe & tips for a safe start in the saddle.

Starting to ride is an exciting journey filled with joy, challenges, and encounters with amazing animals. But for those new to the stable, it can be a bit tricky to know what you actually need, both in terms of equipment and mentally, to have a safe and fun start. In this post, we go through the most important garments in a beginner's riding wardrobe and share smart tips for those who have just stepped into the world of horses.

What should always be in your riding wardrobe as a beginner?

You don't need to have everything from the start, but some garments and protections are important for both comfort and safety:

  1. Riding Helmet – The absolute most important! It should be approved according to current safety standards and fit perfectly. We at Swedish Equestrian are happy to help you fit and find your perfect riding helmet.

  2. Riding Breeches – Provide good grip in the saddle and are free from seams that can chafe. Choose a pair with full-seat or knee-patch details for extra stability.

  3. Riding Gloves – Protect your hands from chafing from the reins and provide a better grip.

  4. Riding Shoes or Jodhpurs with Heels – The heel prevents the foot from slipping through the stirrup.

  5. Riding Socks – Long socks that protect against chafing and fit well in riding shoes and breeches.

  6. Safety Vest (especially if you ride jumping or are a child) – Protects the back, soft tissues, and neck in case of a fall.

Are you new to the stable and wondering what you need to bring to get started with riding in a safe and fun way? We have created a complete checklist for beginners – perfect for those who have just started riding or want to get a better grasp of what is really needed in the riding wardrobe.

The checklist contains everything you need to think about:

  • Proper riding clothes for different weather

  • Equipment for horse care

  • Tips for your first riding session

Whether you ride once a week at a riding school or have just started getting to know horses in a private stable, this checklist is a smart and safe first step into the horse world.

Save, print, and use yourself – or share with a friend who is also a beginner!

Nice-to-have garments when you've been riding for a while:

  • Riding jacket or riding vest.

  • Rain gear adapted for riding.

  • Riding boots (or chaps for jodhpurs).

  • Several sets of riding shirts/training clothes in moisture-wicking materials.

What should you consider as a beginner in riding?

  1. Take it at your own pace – It takes time to find balance and understand the horse. Everyone starts somewhere!

  2. Ask questions – No question is stupid. Learn by being curious.

  3. Be present – Horses mirror your body language and emotional state. Calm, clear, and confident communication goes a long way.

  4. Care is as important as riding – Learn how to groom, saddle, and take care of the horse before and after the session.

  5. Build a relationship with the horse – It's not just about riding but about partnership and trust.

In summary:

Riding is so much more than just sitting on a horse's back. It's about interaction, respect, and a desire to constantly develop. With the right equipment and attitude, you will have a safe and inspiring start to your riding adventure. And don't forget: everyone starts as a beginner – and it's a fantastic place to be.

Good luck in the saddle!
