Sole Protect Year-Round Sole Guard is an innovative and reusable sole guard for horses that can be easily shaped to fit the individual form of the hoof. The product consists of moldable pellets made of polycaprolactone (PCL) that soften in warm water and can be adapted directly to the sole and frog of the hoof. When the material cools, it hardens into a durable protection against the ground. Sole Protect can be removed, reused, and reshaped as needed, making it a flexible option for hoof protection all year round.

Moldable sole guard with individual fit

Sole Protect consists of thermoplastic PCL pellets that become soft and moldable when heated in water to about 60 °C.

The heated mass is shaped to the horse's sole and frog. When the material cools, it hardens and forms a guard that follows the shape of the hoof.

This makes it possible to adapt the sole guard to the individual horse's needs and hoof shape.

Reusable & easy to reshape

One of Sole Protect's main advantages is that the material can be reheated and reshaped multiple times.

The guard can be removed and reapplied without reshaping, provided the fit is still correct.

When the hoof shape changes, for example after trimming, the material can be reheated and readapted.

When reshaping, the finished sole may need to be heated in hot water for a few minutes as the compact mass takes longer to soften than loose pellets.

Adaptable protection all year round

Sole Protect can be used to create individually adapted protection against the ground.

The material can also be shaped with patterns for extra grip and adapted for use as a snow sole during the winter season.

If needed, studs can be added for better grip on winter surfaces.

Polycaprolactone – a moldable material

Sole Protect contains at least 99% polycaprolactone (PCL) and is free from added colorants.

PCL is a thermoplastic material that softens when heated and returns to a solid form when cooled.

According to the product information, the material is not classified as hazardous. The monomer used in the production of PCL is registered under the EU chemicals regulation REACH.

Application – step by step

  1. Clean the hoof: Thoroughly clean the sole and frog with a hoof pick and preferably a wire brush. If needed, pH-minus can be used according to the product instructions. Dry the hoof.

  2. Heat the pellets: Place the desired amount of Sole Protect pellets in warm water, about 60 °C, until the material softens and becomes moldable.

  3. Shape the sole guard: Take out the soft mass with a spoon. Check that the material is not too hot before applying it to the hoof. Then shape the mass to the sole and frog.

  4. Adjust the thickness: Distribute the material evenly and keep the sole thin, not thicker than the horseshoe, to reduce the risk of sole pressure and facilitate removal.

  5. Let it harden: Allow the material to cool naturally or use cooling spray until the sole guard is completely hard.

  6. Check the fit: Ensure that the guard fits correctly and does not cause pressure on sensitive parts of the hoof.

Easy removal

The sole guard can be removed with a hoof pick.

Carefully pry along the edge around the sole until the material releases. Avoid using excessive force.

Note that thicker soles of about 7–10 mm may be more difficult to remove.
